Biotin is a water-soluble B vitamin, otherwise known as vitamin B7 or vitamin H. Because humans and other mammals cannot synthesise biotin, it must be derived from dietary sources and through endogenous synthesis by normal healthy intestinal flora. Dietary sources include liver, eggs, nuts, sardines, legumes, whole grains, bananas and soya beans.

Generally a lack of biotin is rare, however, certain conditions may increase biotin requirements, including, genetic disorder of biotin deficiency, surgical removal of the stomach / gastric bypass, cigarette smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption.

Biotin has important metabolic functions as it works as a co-factor in enabling a variety of enzymes to work efficiently - thereby helping regulate the health and integrity of the skin, intestinal tract (and
other mucous membranes), and contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system, including normal psychological wellbeing.

Biotin, contributes to normal macronutrient metabolism as well as energy-yielding metabolism, helping to transform fat, protein and carbohydrates in food to glucose, needed by the body in order to decrease insulin resistance whilst improving glucose tolerance.
